The Leslie Family in the Antipodes book is NOW AVAILABLE
The Leslie Global Diaspora Foundation is pleased to announce the availability of the book The Leslie Family in the Antipodes. The manuscript written by Jillian A. Burcher in 1998 was found among the documents at Wardhill Estate. In keeping with the mission of the LGDF, the manuscript was edited and published by the Foundation.
The 173-page paperback book tells the story of Patrick and Walter Leslie, second and third sons of William Leslie, Tenth Laird of Wardhill Estate, as they sought their fortune in Australia and New Zealand (the Antipodes) in the 1830s. The book includes detailed information about their endeavors and experiences, as well as biographical information of the Leslie descendants of this family in the Antipodes.
From the Introduction:
“Warthill, the family seat, was not profitable enough to support all the children as well as their eventual families. The practice at the time my story begins, was that where there were several sons in a family, it was usually the eldest who inherited the lands and titles. Younger sons went into the church or emigrated to the colonies, and in the Leslies’ case, three of the sons emigrated to Australia, largely because of Walter Davidson’s interests there.”
We have limited the first printing to 50 copies and are making 40 copies available to subscribers to the LGDF website for a $30 donation, which includes postage in the USA. Please contact the foundation at info@LeslieGDF.org for overseas mailing.
