Griffith’s Valuation Project

As part of the research for the book The Leslies in Ireland  information from the Griffith’s Valuation is being collected. The records span a time period from 1847 to 1864 with various counties recorded in different years. The information is a recording of landowners and their tenants organized by county and townland or parish in Ireland along with the nature of their buildings.

For the book, we are exporting Landowner / Occupier (tenant), the county and the parish. The information below lists the Leslie landowners and the number of tenants. For the book, the tables of information will have greater detail.

This is just the beginning of the data collection. We have not yet done the five counties with the largest number of Leslie tenants: These are Antrim (597), Donegal (721), Down (217), Fermanagh (162), and Monaghan (1505). This is tedious work because the landlord and tenant cannot be exported as a connected set of data. Also, after the data is exported. Some cleanup will need to be done. For example, is Charles Leslie and Charles P Leslie the same person? Also, there is likely to be more than one John Leslie, so that will need to be examined and verified. So, you can see, much more work still needs to be done.

This is remarkable information on Leslies in Ireland.  When all exports are completed, we will have a very good understanding of the number of tenants residing on specific Leslie estates. Furthermore, it provides some information on the number of Leslies residing in Ireland in the mid-1800s.
