The Leslie Papers Transcribed in Australia

The Leslie Papers Transcribed

While searching for information on Leslie Papers in Australia, I came across this blog post.

The author reported that she was reading through the Leslie Family papers housed at the John Oxley Library in the State Library in Queensland.

The Leslie papers are a collection of transcripts and original documents totaling 5 bound volumes. The Leslie papers came from the Warthill Estate in the 1940s. Other Leslie papers were acquired from Kate, Patrick’s wife. These documents were used extensively in research for the book The Leslie Family in the Antipodes written by Jillian Burcher. Which was recently edited and published by the Leslie Global Diaspora Foundation.

According to the blog posting, in 1957 Kenelm Waller wrote a research thesis on these letters. It seems that there were two typists who did the painstaking task of transcribing the letters. Some of the transcripts, denote the undecipherable content as three dots (…) . The contents of these letters are interesting, and these details are recorded in Ms. Burcher’s book. What a great service these people performed by transcribing and making available these historically significant documents.

Their work in transcribing these documents and letters provides inspiration and encouragement for the current work the LGDF is doing with the other dozen or more boxes which remain at Warthill Estate. The documents at Warthill Estate span 500 years of Leslie history and provide insight into the workings of the 1000-acre estate and of the history of generations of Leslies who resided at the estate.

The Leslie Family in the Antipodes book is a must read for anyone interested in the far-flung Leslie family. It is interesting to discover the story of how the younger sons (who did not inherit title or property) in a family had to make strike out on their own to achieve success.
